Very ultimately sorry for writing about thesis again (boo hoo~ you suck!), but this is taking its toll on me and I feel like if I don’t share this, I will eventually succumbed to the darkness (a bit dramatic, but at this point I’ll have to excuse myself and let my drama flare to take over). Most people (and by most people, I mean my friends; by my friends, I mean some people that I hang out with; by some people that I hang out with, I mean just a small group number of people. I don’t think it’s even classifiable as a group, but you get the idea) would prefer to do their thesis in the safe confine of their room and/or the library; I used to be those people (the one that does their thesis in their room, not the library) until I went out and did my thesis in a coffee shop, I am forever changed (again, excuse my drama flare).
YOU ARE LESS TEMPTED TO SLEEP
Imagine this, your desk is next to your bed and when you’re torn between doing your thesis and sleep, obviously you’ll go for sleep, right? Or is it just me? Either way, you can’t be tempted to sleep in a coffee shop. Actually you can be tempted to sleep but there’s no way you can actually sleep; I mean you can if you want to take the effort to walk back home. Trust me, with the amount of walk you have to do; by the time you’re back, you’re not sleepy anymore. Seriously, it’s not worth it. So, if you’re doing your thesis in a coffee shop and sleepiness attack, you can just go and buy coffee (for God sake, you’re in a coffee shop!) and stay awake and march on through with your thesis, such a good idea, right? Well, it is, until your weak stomach cause you a stomach ache and you have to do number 2 in a public toilet but you can’t (looks at own experience).
YOU ARE LESS TEMPTED TO WATCH TIME-CONSUMING VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE
This is one of the biggest temptation that I have when doing my thesis, it seems like there’s always a new video that needs to be watched on YouTube, and once you watched one video there’s another one waiting to be watched; next thing you know, you have successfully waste a whole entire day for those time-consuming (not to mention, at times, pointless) videos. Sure, you can watch the exact same videos while you’re in a coffee shop; you have your laptop with you, you have Internet connection, you’re all set with a nice drink and possibly a snack, but wait! You can’t really enjoy it as much and as often as when you’re in your room, why? Because public Internet connection can sometimes be a challenge, especially when the coffee shop is full of people, so you have to fight for its speed, and when you’re watching a video on YouTube and having to wait until it finishes to buffer is not an ideal situation, right? So, what to do, then? Go back and do your thesis, of course.
YOU ARE MOST DEFINITELY LESS TEMPTED TO WATCH A WHOLE ENTIRE MOVIE
This is a bit debatable though, as I’ve seen several people actually watched a movie in a coffee shop. How is that supposed to be fun for them? First, you can’t lounge around, as you are in a coffee shop and the amount of lounging you can exert is only so much. Second, I really don’t like people (especially strangers) viewing what I’m viewing (accidentally or deliberately), therefore watching a movie in a public place is a huge no-no for me. I am always (as in always) tempted to be watching all the movies I have when I’m suppose to be doing something important (and I’m not even a moviegoer), so if I were to be doing my thesis in a coffee shop, which happens to be a public space, I would never be tempted to watched a movie, resulting in me doing something more productive (which happens to be my thesis, boo hoo~).
YOU BECOME MORE CALCULATIVE WITH YOUR TIME (AND POSSIBLY MONEY)
Let me put it this way, when you decided to go out and do your thesis in a coffee shop you went through several steps, namely (1) You actually have to go out and walk (or take a bus or what other mode of transportation of your choice) to reached the coffee shop of your choice, and that’s already time-consuming, right? (2) When you’ve arrived at the coffee shop of your choice, you would have to order a drink (and possibly a snack if you’re feeling a bit generous) which you have to pay, right? That’s already costing you extra money, right? (3) Then, you have to navigate your way through the coffee shop in search of a perfect spot to do your thesis (this perfect spot usually differs between a secluded spot in the corner, or a spot where others can’t see what you’re working on, or a spot where there’s an unoccupied electrical socket for you to charge your laptop). This is the single most important thing in doing your thesis, because you don’t want to end up in a wrong place that you are not comfortable with. When you’ve gone so much just to finally start your thesis and then decided to just fool around and/or deciding to go back home because you’re sleepy, you’ll remember the time you’ve spent just to get there, the money you’ve waste on your fancy beverage (and possibly snack), and the manoeuvring you’ve done to get to your perfect spot; then you’ll ask yourself, ‘why would I gave all these away and go back home? Might as well try to get a couple of pages done or maybe a reading at least.’ Much more productive, right?
YOU’LL LOOK SMART AND SOPHISTICATED AF WHEN YOU’RE DOING YOUR THESIS AMIDST OTHERS WHO ARE POSSIBLY ON A DATE OR JUST TRYING TO LOOK FANCY AF WITH THEIR SOPHISTICATED CHOICE OF COFFEE
I know you think this is not important, but it actually is. How so? When you pull out your laptop and you start to frown because you’re so deep in your thoughts as to what you should write next in your thesis amidst all the other strangers, you would (weirdly) be empowered to be more serious and actually starts to think about the content of your thesis instead of just putting an act to a crowd of strangers. When you do actually starts to type something into your computer, the click and the clack of your laptop’s keyboard empowers you to keep on typing and you’ll curse under your breath when you fail to keep on writing. If you keep on following this rhythm, next thing you know, you might have a couple of pages ready to be proofread at hand; something you’re most probably won’t have had you done your thesis in your room. I don’t know if this is something that could be scientifically proven, but I’ve tried it out myself (and although I am in no way an expert on this matter, but this is definitely something that should be worth to consider).
YOU’LL FEEL BETTER AT THE END OF THE DAY
Sure, you might waste some money for a drink that you’re just going to throw out as a pee anyway, but here’s the thing; when you finally reached a dead end and/or you’ve been in the coffee shop for too long and/or you felt you need a break now and go out for dinner, you’ll feel like you have done your day good. You actually use your time to do your thesis; maybe you didn’t actually finish all your thesis or even reached the half of it, but the fact that you made a progress instead of just planning about doing your thesis but ends up doing nothing but wandering aimlessly on the Internet (looks at self) should feel good to you, right? And when you feel good about your progress, you would be more energised to do it again for the next day.
SO, COFFEE SHOP, THEN?
It boils down back to you though. You don’t have to do it if you don’t like the idea of going out and do your thesis in a public place, but if you’re looking for an alternative, maybe you could try it out for once. Just don’t keep on going to the same coffee shop all the time, you’ll get bored soon; alternately change the coffee shop of your choice. Also, try to stick to just buying one beverage; bring your own water bottle, so when you ran out of your drink you don’t have to buy another one, and you’ll still be hydrated with proper water instead of coffee all the time (or any other beverage of your choice). A snack is optional, but it’s best to just bring your own snack; nothing fancy, a bag of M&Ms is enough to keep you occupied until you have your lunch or dinner.
So, until then. Cheers!
