Life is just generally boring for me the last few weeks after RAM went back to Abuja, but good things aren’t going to come and knocking on your doors; you have to make your own good things. And whilst a good food is sometimes more than enough to make me feel good, other times it could be music, tv shows or just literally could be anything. On that note, I am now seriously thinking of creating a new category, which would be about things that I am currently obsessing about. I don’t know if I can keep this category up, but we’ll have to see. So, what is my current obsession?
Zumbo’s Just Desserts
This is your run of the mill cooking show, but solely on desserts. Kind of remind me of The Great British Bake Off, which I am still bummed about it ending and leaving the BBC. Like you can’t have GBBO without the original cast; sure I wouldn’t mind kicking Paul Hollywood altogether, he just doesn’t fit the whole aesthetic of Mary Berry, Mel Giedroyc, and Sue Perkins. But, hey, this isn’t about GBBO, this is about Zumbo’s Just Desserts.
Just like watching Australia’s Masterchef seems to be more fun than the US’ version, because there are less bickering between contestants (like, damn girl, I’m here for the food, cut me off of your drama, please), so does Zumbo’s Just Desserts. Being an Australian show, obvi there are less of those petty dramas that are somehow a normal recurrence in any US’ contest shows. I mean, a good competition is always healthy, but once again people, cut off the drama!
Anyway, here’s what you need to know about the show:
- 12 contestants fought to be the best dessert makers, typical, your standard cooking show;
- The show starts with Zumbo and Rachel Khoo giving out the theme of the day for all contestants to create their own recipe based on the theme, the segment is called sensations task;
- The judges taste each contestants dessert, chose the dessert of the day, and then chose the two weakest desserts;
- The two weakest dessert makers will battle it out on the Zumbo test, where they will have to recreate Zumbo’s creation which is just bloody insane, I tell you! ZUmbo’s desserts are just crazy! Not in a bad way, but in a good and yet it’ll fuck you up kind of way, because for God sake, you are about to secure your position in this contest!
- And we’re back to number one again until we’ve reached the grand final.
And here are the things that I liked about the show, which I hope you would have enjoyed too:
The set is just fantastic!! A feast for the eyes!
It is just a burst of colours! It’s like Willy Wonka’s factory but not as crazy (side note, the set is called dessert factory). I would love to be there just for the heck of it, because let’s be honest I really do not know my way around any kitchen, real or just sets.
The countdown timer fits is just so cool
That countdown timer, yeah I really want it. I want it in my super small apartment just for aesthetic reason only. I don’t even care if it doesn’t go with the whole theme of the apartment (not that I have one anyway). But I could really go without the
tick tock buzz sound every time the number changes. It’s a bit annoying and not something I would like hear every time I’m going to sleep.
The theme from each episodes are just mind blowing and interesting (for the viewers, I’m sure, not the contestants)
From having to create desserts that reflects who you are (seriously, this is just confusing), to desserts that defy gravity (just like the photo above)! How? How do you even come up with these themes? And what I like the most is the fact that Zumbo just doesn’t get to fork up the contestants mind with these mind blowing themes, he is also able to create a dessert following the theme, so that’s fair. You don’t just get this judges who gets to tear your creation apart and not bold enough to create the same dessert according to the theme.
Also, will you look at that defying dessert?? Look! Look!

I am obsessed with Rachel Khoo’s dresses! It is just so gorgeous!
I literally could share her whole entire wardrobe from Zumbo’s Just Desserts, but why don’t y’all pop on over to her own site and have a gander. I just love love love love her wardrobe, all the A-line skirts are just to die for, but then again I know nothing about fashion so it might not even correct calling it an A-line skirt. Is it even called A-line skirt? Ah whatevs. Point is, Rachel’s wardrobe is one of the highlights of the show.
That and the many slow mo when the camera zooms in on the many many desserts in the making, which sadly I can’t share here, because how do you even share a photo of something moving in a slow mo? Seriously, how?
Zumbo tests’ recipes are insane! I mean it! Insane!
Will you look at that? It’s Zumbo’s take on the classic croquembouche, but damn he just had to take everything up a notch (or probably more in the case of this Lovenbouche), and what’s insane is two weakest dessert makers of the episode had to recreate this creation! It’s bad enough you’re one of the weakest dessert maker of the day, then you have to prove your worth in front of a lot of people, and then in proving your worth you are about to recreate a chef’s creation, and not just a regular chef, but the Dark Lord of the Pastry Kitchen.
But hey, if you think the Lovenbouche is already crazy, how about watching the whole season in Netflix and see for yourself what other recipes from Zumbo that are insane, but entertaining for the viewers.
